What is a credit union?  
A credit union is a unique, not-for-profit, cooperative financial institution. Unlike a bank, it is owned and operated by its member/owners for the sole benefit of its member/owners. Its board of directors and committee members serve as unpaid volunteers on behalf of their fellow credit union members and are elected by their fellow members. Because credit unions are tax exempt and because they do not pay profits to stockholders or executives, their earnings are returned to the members as higher dividends on savings and lower rates on loans.

Credit unions are organized by groups of people with a common bond, usually employment, church membership, or residence in a community. These people band together to give themselves a safe place to save and borrow where they are known and trusted and where they know they will not have to pay excessive rates for loans and other financial services. They borrow from the pool of their fellow members’ savings. Credit unions are proud examples of the “People Helping People” philosophy in action. The cooperative credit union concept has worked successfully for more than 150 years and today more than 97 million people benefit from membership in some 39,007 credit unions in 84 countries.

Volunteers

The general policies and rules for operation for the Credit Union are determined by the Board of Directors, who are elected by the members. All Directors and Committee Members are volunteer members of the credit union who contribute their time and effort without compensation.  The decisions of the Board of Directors are based on the interest of the membership as a whole.
